Hard Landings

14th November 2010

To Bembridge was the intent, but the weather down south was not that good. We'd get there, but not back. Alternatives? Go north west, a front was due, but much later. How about trying the new hard runway at Sywell? That settled, courses are plot and departures made.

The noble steed. All present and correct.

From Andrewsfield we had G-ASUD our Cherokee, G-OSII Vic's 172 and G-IKRK, Roddy's Europa. From North Weald the dual Charlies Bob and Nick in G-RJCC.

Not a day for the balcony. Sywell International.

The journey to Sywell was uneventful, the weather fine and the hard runway glorious. Landing fee paid and into the Cafe for food.

Nick in the shadows. Turning out.

Sywell. Weather front.

Food consumed and back to the aeroplanes, don't want to tease that pending weather front too much.

Looking gloomier. Podington.

No action. Wind farm.

However, once we are on our way it is pretty obvious the weather front is early and around Cambridge. Not too many options but have a look at it for a way through. If none found then an impromptu visit to Bourn.

Eaton Socon, A1. Radio Telescope.

Duxford. Cloud.

We managed to pick a way through in G-ASUD, Nick and Bob apparently went IMC on the way south back to North Weald. So having got through we can relax. No! The weather between Haverhill and Andrewsfield is not good and quite low.

Grim. and the view south.

Still we managed to find a way around, slaloming round the villages as we are below 1000ft. A rather hurried and mucky landing at Andrewsfield and a sigh relief are quickly followed by a visit to the bar. One for the experience record then!
